Freedom, Beauty, Truth, and Love
Moulin Rouge
I love the movie Moulin Rouge. I totally did not understand all the hype about it when it first came out – I thought it was just your everyday movie. I finally rented it once, years ago, and was just bewildered throughout the entire thing, starting with the first rendition of “Sound of Music” and continuing when the dancers break into “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” I’m still in awe of all the musical references contained in this movie. It’s fantastic. I totally want the soundtrack. The second one though, the one that has all the movie versions of the songs on it. The sets are gorgeous too; I love how they look so miniature and antique and lavish.
In the interviews with the cast at the end of the movie (I’ve got a special version or something) they talk about how some things are just too stupid sounding to say on their own, but if you put them in a song and they are sung, they can be the most beautiful phrases ever. I totally agree. “Your Song” is very pretty, but the words to it are just sort of… weird, if they’re spoken and not sung. Awkward, I guess. Music is so powerful – it can turn awkward sounding words into a meaningful and moving thing. I love it.
The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return.

I saw this movie 6 times in the theatre, I dragged everyone I knew to it, and it made me cry everytime. It still does.
